About Carey Clarke

Born in County Donegal in 1936, Carey Clarke is widely regarded as one of Ireland's most accomplished and respected painters. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he has earned an outstanding reputation  for his mastery of portraiture, landscape, still life, and interior painting. His work is celebrated for it's remarkable technical precision, sensitivity to light, and ability to capture both the physical likeness and emotional essence of his subjects.

Clarke's lifelong passion for art began in childhood, inspired by the dramatic landscapes of Donegal, with it's rugged mountains, expansive skies, and ever-changing weather. These early experiences fostered a deep appreciation for the natural world, which continues to influence his work to this day. His paintings transform into images of quiet beauty and significance.

He studied at the National College of Art and Design from 1954 - 1959, where he developed a rigorous foundation in observational drawing and traditional painting techniques. He undertook further studies at the Salzburg Academy of Fine Arts in 1969, and in Florence during 1976 - 1977, and later at the Slade School of Fine Art in 1991.

In addition to his achievements as a painter, Clarke had a distinguished teaching career at NCAD, where he taught and mentored generations of Irish artists. His dedication to classical drawing and technical excellence made him a highly influential figure in Irish art education.

Clarke was elected to the Royal Hibernian Academy and later served as it's president from 1992 to 1996. His work is held in  numerous public and private collections, including those of RTE, Allied Irish Banks, Aer Lingus, the Office of Public Works, and many significant institutions throughout Ireland.

Today, Carey Clarke continues to paint with the same dedication and passion that has defined his extraordinary career,  creating works that stand testament to his enduring contribution to Irish art and culture.
